Oregon Blanks North Texas, 9-0
02/21/15 | Softball
WACO, Texas – The No. 2-ranked Oregon softball team came out of the gates swinging Saturday morning at Getterman Stadium in a 9-0 win over North Texas. The Ducks shelled the North Texas starting pitcher for nine runs on nine hits in just five innings.
Karissa Hovinga picked up the win for UO (14-0) and improved to 5-0 on the year after tossing a five inning shutout, giving up just a pair of hits with one walk while mowing down six batters.
How It Happened: Disciplined hitting helped the Ducks put up a trio of runs in the bottom of the second. Hailey Decker opened things up with a single to left center before Koral Costa drew the two-out walk. Sammie Puentes then put runners on the corners for Nikki Udria, who reached on an error by the Mean Green shortstop, scoring Puentes and Costa.
In the very next frame, Oregon plated another three runs to take the 6-0 lead after Gwen Svekis forced the North Texas (5-8) catcher to overthrow her second basemen on a steal attempt to second. That error would score the second and third runs for the Ducks in the bottom of the third.
Hovinga tossed another 1-2-3 inning in the top of fourth, forcing the Mean Green defense to get back out onto the field. The Ducks then chased Kenzie Grimes, the North Texas starter, out of the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth after Jenna Lilley knocked in UO's first of three runs in the frame.
Jasmine Smithson-Willett, who came in to pinch hit for Janelle Lindvall, roped a double into right center and extended the Oregon lead to 9-0.
Hovinga finished out the game with a pair of punch outs to put the game away and give UO its 14th-straight win.
Odds & Ends: This was only the second meeting between North Texas and Oregon, with the Ducks coming out victorious both times…The two last played on Feb. 12, 2011, when the then-No. 14 Ducks defeated the Mean Green 12-6 in six innings…This is the sixth time Oregon has held a team scoreless this season through 14 games…Lilley continues her tear against opposing pitchers, going 2-for-3 with two runs and a pair of RBIs today…The freshman is now batting .522 with 24 hits and 15 RBIs, all of which leads the team (min. 20 at bats).
Up Next: The Ducks will have a few hours to catch up on some rest before returning to Getterman Stadium for its final game of the Baylor Invitational with a rematch against the host, No. 7 Baylor at 2:15 p.m. (PT).
