Ducks split first day of San Diego Classic
02/28/15 | Softball
SAN DIEGO – The No. 2 Oregon softball team split its first two games of the San Diego Classic, upending St. John's 8-5 in the tourney opener before falling to top-ranked Florida by a 3-0 margin at co-host San Diego State's softball complex.
How It Happened: After spotting St. John's (4-8) a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, the Ducks (15-2) scored the game's next eight runs to build a comfortable cushion. Gwen Svekis tied the game in the bottom of the second with a 2-run homer to the opposite field in right, and UO, which was the designated home team, added a single run in the third and a five-spot in the fourth.
Karissa Hovinga (6-0) started and tossed the first four frames, allowing two runs. She was also summoned to record the final out, inheriting a bases-loaded situation after reliever Jasmine Smithson-Willett was tagged for three runs in the seventh.
After a 30-minute break, the Ducks and No. 1 Gators (18-0) renewed acquaintances for the first time since last year's Women's College World Series in what would be a battle between two of the top pitchers in the college ranks.
Oregon's Cheridan Hawkins (5-2) and Florida's Delanie Gourley (5-0) - both southpaws - tossed dueling gems, but the Gators ultimately prevailed in part because of UO's three fielding errors and another miscue on the bases.
After plating the game's opening run on a passed ball in the bottom of the third, UF tacked on two more unearned runs in the sixth, giving Gourley more than enough support to finish off the win.
The Ducks best chance to break through at the plate came in the top of the sixth, when they put two on with one out, but Danica Mercado was picked off first base before Jenna Lilley struck out swinging to end the threat.
Who Stood Out: Janie Takeda led the Ducks with four hits on the day (4-for-7) … Takeda and Svekis, who added a triple to her home run in Game 1, both scored a team-high two runs … Koral Costa had UO's lone extra-base hit against the Gators, smacking a two-out double in the fifth and ending Gourley's no-hit bid … Hawkins scattered four hits and struck out eight in her complete-game effort, walking only one.
Odds & Ends: Hawkins has taken the loss in two straight starts, but allowed just a single earned run over that stretch. Her season ERA now stands at 0.34 … Svelkis leads the team in batting average (.591), slugging percentage (1.136), on-base percentage (.630) and triples (2) … The Ducks will have another shot at the Gators next Friday at the Judy Garman Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
Up Next: Oregon faced tournament co-host San Diego State on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.
