02/07/15 | Women's Golf
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Oregon women's golf team made history today by winning the inaugural Civil War Match Play Challenge 6.5 – 2.5 over Oregon State Friday afternoon at Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore.
How It Happened: The two rivals played a total of 36 holes with the first 18 in a greensome format and the latter 18 in singles match play. Oregon's team of Marcella Pranovia and Cathleen Santoso played in the first group of the day against Oregon State's Anica Yoo and Haley Nist, and the two teams ended their match all square giving each side a half of a point.
The Ducks earned a point and the lead when Kelsey Ulep and Caroline Inglis defeated Ashlee Pickerell and Lauren Fischer convincingly 5 and 4. OSU drew even with the Ducks when the Beavers' Chelsea Saelee and Jesse Hamilton edged out Cassy Isagawa and Cali Hipp 2 and 1. After the first 18 the match was tied 1.5 – 1.5.
Santoso was the first to clinch a point for Oregon in the afternoon during singles match play when she won 5 and 4 over Chelsea Saelee. The sophomore was 4-under through the 14 holes that she played.
Ulep and Pranovia made it a 4.5 – 1.5 lead for the Ducks when they claimed victories over Lauren Fischer and Anica Yoo, respectively. Ulep won decisively 5 and 3, and Pranovia recorded a solid 3 and 2 win.
Cali Hipp secured the victory for UO when she won 3 and 2 over Oregon State's Haley Nist, giving the Ducks the key fifth point.
Inglis made the score 6.5 – 1.5 when she outlasted Jesse Hamilton 3 and 1 to pick up the Ducks' fifth singles win of the day.
Isagawa fell in her match versus Ashlee Pickerell 2 and 1, giving the Beavers their only match play point of the day to make the final score 6.5 – 2.5.
What It Means: The Ducks earned valuable experience today competing in a match play format. The NCAA Golf Championships' revamped format now features the final eight teams in a 72-hole, match play tournament to decide the national champion. UO hopes to be in the mix come late May, so today's experience will potentially help them down the line.
Civil War Victory: In what was the inaugural Civil War Match Play Challenge, the Ducks made their mark in Civil War history with the win today in Portland. With the victory, Oregon now leads Oregon State 8-3 in the overall, year-long Civil War Series.
Next Up: The Ducks will get into the meat of the spring season next weekend when they travel to Stanford, Calif., to compete in the Peg Barnard Invitational on Feb. 14 and 15 at the Stanford Golf Course.
