Maasland Defeats Ranked Foe In 6-1 Loss To USC
03/29/15 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – Oregon fell 6-1 to No. 6 USC Saturday afternoon at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles, but not before Daan Maasland picked up a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win at the No. 1 singles position against the Trojans' 114th-ranked singles player, Eric Johnson.
How It Happened: The No. 51 Ducks (11-6, 0-2) made USC work for every point they got, especially so in the doubles point. Facing the 3rd-ranked doubles team in the country in the Trojans' Yannick Hanfmann and Roberto Quiroz, Maasland and Joey Swaysland teamed up and just fell short of the upset, losing 6-4 on court one. Brent Chin and Cormac Clissold followed by giving Max de Vroome and Thibault Forget a run for their money at the No. 3 spot, but USC pulled through with a 6-4 win and won the opening point.
De Vroome – the 66th-ranked singles player in the country – was tested again in singles, this time by the Ducks' Jayson Amos. The sophomore played well, but USC won the match 6-4, 6-4 and took the 2-0 lead.
The Trojans' 68th-ranked Nick Crystal took down Swaysland 6-3, 6-3 on court five, and 35th-ranked Jonny Wang got the best of Clissold 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 position to clinch the match for USC.
Chin picked up more valuable experience at the No. 6 spot, but he ended up falling 6-2, 6-2 to Forget.
Maasland made the score 5-1 with his straight-set win over Johnson. The defeat over the 114th-ranked player is the highest ranked singles player any Duck has defeated this season. The previous high was when Daniel Sardu eliminated the then 123rd-ranked player in Ace Matias from UNLV in the championship match in the Larry Easley Memorial Classic during the fall season.
Sardu almost pulled off the biggest upset of the day when he pushed 19th-ranked Roberto Quiroz to the brink on court two, but the Sopron, Hungary, native came up short with a 7-5, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (10-3) loss. The final tally saw USC come away with a 6-1 win, bringing them to 16-3 (2-0) on the year.
Faced the Big Dogs
Without a doubt, this weekend was the toughest competition that the Ducks will face all season. It doesn't get much tougher than playing the two Pac-12 perennial powerhouses on the road to start the conference slate.
Now Oregon will have two home matches at the Student Tennis Center against No. 43 Stanford and No. 30 California, and then two road matches at Arizona and Utah before closing the regular season at home against rival No. 56 Washington.
Next Up: The Ducks will face the Cardinal on Friday, April 3 at 3 p.m. (PT) at the Student Tennis Center, and then the Golden Bears on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m.
