Big Inning Dooms Ducks
03/29/15 | Baseball
Tucson, Arizona – Arizona put together and eight-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning and No. 22 Oregon could never recover as the Wildcats clinched the series with a 9-5 win on Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field.
How It Happened: Arizona (21-6, 6-2 Pac-12) overcame a 3-1 deficit with the eight-run inning thanks to seven hits and three Oregon (17-10, 2-6 Pac-12) errors. The Ducks have committed eight errors in the first two games of the series. Freshman David Peterson (2-3) was cruising after giving up a leadoff home run to Scott Kingery in the bottom of the first inning. The Ducks lefty retired 11 of the next 13 hitters without giving up a hit before things blew up in the fifth. Peterson walked the leadoff hitter in the big inning and then surrendered three straight base hits as Arizona cut the lead to 3-2. After getting Kingery to pop out in foul territory for the first out of the inning, the next three hitters got hits chasing Peterson. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
What It Means: Oregon lost its third straight Pac-12 series to open conference play. It's the first time Oregon has lost its first three series in Pac-12 play since 2011 when the dropped series to Arizona State (3-0), Washington (2-1) and USC (2-1). The eight runs allowed by Oregon were the most in an inning since they gave up eight to Oregon State on May 20, 2009 in a 14-4 loss.
Craig-St. Louis Has Big Game: Oregon left fielder Phil Craig-St. Louis had a big game for Oregon finishing 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Craig-St. Louis hit his first career home run in the top of the fourth inning, a two-run shot, to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead. He added a double and scored a run in the sixth. Daniel Patzlaff (2-for-4, RBI) and Brandon Cuddy (2-for-4, 2 runs scored) also had two hits each.
On Deck: Oregon and Arizona wrap up the three-game set on Sunday at 11:05 a.m. with the game televised on the Pac-12 Networks. UO will send Cole Irvin (1-1) to the mound.
