Struggles On Diamond Continue With 6-4 Loss To Portland
04/01/15 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon baseball team's struggles continued Tuesday as the Ducks fell 6-4 to Portland in a nonleague game at PK Park. It was the fourth loss in a row for the UO baseball team, which is 4-10 over its last 14 games.
How It Happened: After a scoreless first inning, the Pilots (6-24) scored in each of the next four frames. Oregon's gloves let the team down in the fourth, when a poor relay from the outfield allowed a runner to score from first on a single in a hit-and-run situation. That made it 3-0, and Portland tacked on three more in the fifth — all unearned — with one run scoring on a throwing error and two more coming around on a mishandled groundball to shortstop.
Those runs made it 6-2 after the Ducks (17-12) got on the board with a two-run Shaun Chase home run in the fourth. Scott Heineman added a solo shot in the fifth, and Mark Karaviotis scored on an error in the seventh. But the Ducks mustered just one baserunner in the final two innings.
Heineman Hits One Hard: Heineman's home run was his first since the 2013 season. The junior outfielder missed most of the 2014 campaign due to injury, and ultimately took a medical hardship. "It felt nice, that one did," he said.
Early Hole Too Deep: Oregon's bullpen pitched five innings without allowing an earned run, as Cooper Stiles allowed three unearned over three innings and Stephen Nogosek pitched the final two. But the Ducks couldn't muster enough offense, managing just four hits while striking out 10 times.
Quotable:
George Horton, UO head coach
On the team's recent struggles
"We've got a lot of athletes that are trying really hard. They're trying to get through this rough patch. Even coming back from Arizona — we got outplayed, we got out-everything'd — (but) the one constant we did have was an attitude of togetherness, teamwork, will to win and all those things that are controllable; hustle. I've got a bunch of athletes and coaches that are very confused, and now it looks like some carefulness has crept in, and in some cases trying to hard — all those things that come with lack of confidence, or lack of success. It would be really easy to beat them up but I'm the head coach, and the responsibility starts with me. Hopefully we can find the formula to get them going again."
Scott Heineman, junior outfielder
On the nearly two-week break from conference play that began Tuesday
"We haven't showed up and performed yet in conference. So it'll be nice to have an opportunity this weekend to figure out what's going on, bounce back, and then we've got conference the next weekend. Hopefully we're ready to go."
Up Next: The Ducks face Seattle on Wednesday at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillboro at 6 p.m.
