HILLSBORO — Oregon pitchers didn't allow another hit after a leadoff single Wednesday, and the Ducks' offense broke through to end the team's four-game losing streak with a 4-0 nonconference victory over Seattle at Ron Tonkin Field.
How It Happened: Freshman left-hander Jacob Corn (3-0) teamed with three relievers to hold the Redhawks hitless following a single to open the game. Corn pitched around five walks over 5 2/3 innings, then watched relievers Brac Warren, Josh Graham and Garrett Cleavinger slam the door for the second shutout of the season by the Ducks (18-12).
Tim Susnara led off the fifth for the Ducks with a single, went to second on a bunt by Austin Grebeck and took third when a pop fly to short left field by Scott Heineman fell between three Redhawks who lost track of the ball. Matt Eureste then dropped down a bunt, and Susnara scored after reaching past the catcher to touch home plate at the end of his slide.
Oregon broke the game open in the eighth by loading the bases without a hit to open the inning, thanks to a hit batsman and two walks. The lead became 2-0 on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Cuddy, and Mark Karaviotis followed with a two-run double.
Corn Comes Through: Corn remained unbeaten in three midweek starts this season, allowing the one hit and five walks while striking out three. The lanky left-hander stranded runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and fifth, and got help from Warren after leaving the game with two on in the sixth.
Corn cruised through the second and third, retiring eight in a row at one point. "That was basically our tempo," Corn said. "Credit to Timmy (Susnara) staying down and being ready when I'm ready, and coach getting the signs in. Tempo is always a good thing."
Welcome Back Mark: Shortstop has been a competitive situation of late between Karaviotis and freshman Daniel Patzlaff, and the veteran came through when given the chance Wednesday. Karaviotis fielded his position cleanly and came up with the game-breaking two-run double in the eighth.
"Patzlaff has worked hard all year; he deserves every opportunity he gets," Karaviotis said. "We've been kind of going back and forth in there, but I've been ready when my number's called. We're known for our dugout so we're in on every pitch, we get pregame reps, so we're able to stay sharp and remain active out there."
Up Next: The Ducks open a three-game series against Michigan State on Friday at 6 p.m. in PK Park.
