EUGENE, Ore. — A day after wrapping up its first series win over Arizona State since 2005, the second-ranked Oregon softball team completed its first sweep of the No. 19 Sun Devils since 1989 by winning 4-3 on Sunday before 1,138 at Howe Field.
How It Happened: After winning by a combined 19-3 over the first two games, the Ducks (35-5, 13-2 Pac-12) found the going a bit tougher in the finale. But first, Oregon used four walks and a groundball out to score twice without the benefit of a hit in the first inning. The Ducks then tacked on two more in the second on a home run by Lauren Lindvall and a sacrifice fly by Jenna Lilley that scored Alyssa Gillespie.
ASU's Breanna Macha (settled down from there, allowing just two singles and a walk the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Oregon's Cheridan Hawkins (18-3) cruised through five innings, then allowed a two-run homer in the sixth and a solo shot in the seventh. "They're a good team, and they finally started to come out of their shell a little bit," UO coach Mike White said. "But a sweep is a sweep, and I think that's the first time we've done that in a very long time against ASU."
What It Means: Arizona State had been the only team the Ducks had yet to take a series from in the Mike White era, and after getting that monkey off their backs Saturday, they completed the sweep Sunday. Oregon is now 4 1/2 games ahead of UCLA for first place in the Pac-12.
"The Pac-12 Conference is really good; they're a great team," said Hawkins, who struck out six and allowed five hits with one walk in seven innings. "But you always want the sweep. Every win counts in this conference, every win's important, so we always are going for that."
Fun Fact: Lindvall's home run gave the Ducks at least one in seven straight games, their longest stretch of the season. "It's really cool to see everyone in the lineup be able to pop at any time," the UO freshman said.
Up Next: The Ducks face Portland State in a doubleheader Tuesday in Hillsboro, before resuming conference play Saturday at Stanford (3:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
