Ducks Lead After Two Rounds at the Silverado Showdown
04/14/15 | Women's Golf
NAPA, Calif. – The Oregon women's golf team powered through the long 36-hole opening day of the Second Annual Silverado Showdown and finished Monday in first place with a 13-over 589 at the Silverado Resort North Course. The Ducks fired an 11-over 299 in the first round and improved in the second 18 with a 2-over 290 in the afternoon to jump from second to first.
Caroline Inglis kept the Ducks in the first round with an even-par 72, but it was the trio of Kelsey Ulep (2-under 70), Cassy Isagawa (even-par 72) and Cathleen Santoso (1-over 73) in the second round that catapulted the Ducks into the driver's seat of the 15-team tournament.
How It Happened: Hosting the Silverado Showdown with Colorado for the second-consecutive year, the Ducks set out to improve upon last year's fifth-place finish. Starting on holes 15-18, UO only managed six birdies in the first round. Inglis' two guided her to the even-par 72, and Ulep was able to card two of her own, but was held back by six bogeys and one double to finish the first 18 with a 6-over 78.
Santoso came away with a solid 2-over 74 thanks to 14 pars, and Marcella Pranovia added a huge boost to the Ducks' morning thanks to a 3-over 75. The Bali, Indonesia, native was able to record a birdie on the par-4 10th – a feat that no other Duck was able to manage today.
Isagawa's first round 7-over 79 was thrown out, and Cali Hipp enjoyed a stellar 2-over 74 behind four birdies playing as an individual.
The winds picked up and the greens hardened as the day moved into the second round, but Oregon dug in and produced the second-lowest second round score.
Ulep and Isagawa both caught fire and each poured in four birdies in the second round to fuel their 2-under and even-par rounds, respectively.
Santoso did not convert a birdie, but 17 pars in the second round allowed her to finish 1-over. Inglis grinded her way through the latter 18 and wrapped up with a 3-over 75.
Pranovia carded a 10-over 82, and Hipp finished the afternoon with a 9-over 81.
Overall, Inglis and Santoso are tied for seventh place at 3-over (147), and Ulep is close behind in a tie for 10th (4-over 148).
Colorado's Esther Lee is in 1st place at 3-under (141).
Ducks' Rotation Goes Deep
Despite not having one player in the top five, the Ducks still managed to claw their way into the lead after two rounds of play. Ulep was the only player to have an under-par round (70), but each player's timely contributions throughout the two rounds allowed the Ducks to pull ahead on a day where the course was playing fairly tough.
Leading, But Far From Over
On the flip side, UO will have to play great tomorrow morning if they want to hold off Colorado (16-over) and Northwestern (19-over). The Buffaloes are led by the tournament's individual leader, and Northwestern showed why they are the No. 12 team in the country after firing an even-par 288 in the second round to shave 19 strokes off their first round score.
Quotable: Head Coach Ria Scott
”The course played very different than last year. From the morning to afternoon rounds, the greens firmed up really quickly because of the wind and the sunshine, but I think it's a great test for our team and all of our competitors headed into postseason tournaments.”
“I do know that our team really rallied on the back nine (of the second round). I told a few of our players this: what I love about recently watching our team is that they become more energized on the second 18 holes on a really long day. So I think their fitness level as of late has really helped with their focus on such long tournament days.”
Next Up: The Ducks will go for their second tournament title of the year tomorrow morning when they tee off in the third and final round at 8:30 a.m. (PT) with players from Northwestern and Colorado.
