UO Wins at Silverado, Grabs Second Spring Title
04/15/15 | Women's Golf
NAPA, Calif. – The Oregon women's golf team fought off a late rush from Oregon State and won the Second Annual Silverado Showdown with a 25-over 889 in Napa, Calif., at the Silverado North Course, defeating the Beavers (890) by just one stroke. The team championship marks the second title of the year for the Ducks, who have now placed in first or second in four out of their five spring tournaments.
Freshman Kelsey Ulep led the Ducks for the second-consecutive round and finished the final 18 with a 1-over 73, but it was Caroline Inglis' back-to-back birdies on the 17th and 18th holes that ultimately pushed UO back ahead of Oregon State after they made a charge at the end of the day. Ulep and (78-70-73, 221) and Inglis (72-75-74, 221) both tied for fifth place at 5-over par.
How It Happened: Ulep poured in three birdies – two of which came on par-4's – in the final round and earned her third top-five individual finish of the year. Inglis had not recorded a birdie all day until she caught fire the last two holes and converted a pair of tweeters that allowed her to nab her third-straight top-five individual finish with a 2-over 74 in the final round.
Cassy Isagawa provided the Ducks' third-best score on the day with a 4-over 76, giving her a tie for 26th at 227 (79-72-76). The senior enjoyed three birdies on a day where only five players in the entire field finished the third round under par.
Cathleen Santoso gave Oregon their fourth and final counting score after recording a 5-over 77. Santoso was plagued by five bogeys, but the sophomore was still able to finish tied for 17th with an 8-over 224 (74-73-77).
Playing as an individual, Cali Hipp finished strong with a 3-over 75 to give herself a 14-over 230 (74-81-75). Marcella Pranovia wrapped up with a 11-over 83 and ended the tournament in a tie for 66th (75-82-83).
California's Lucia Gutierrez won the individual title with a 4-under 212, and Colorado's Esther Lee was the only other player to finish under par with a 1-under 215.
Two Title Feat: With the Silverado Showdown Team Championship, the Ducks have now won two spring tournaments in a season for the first time since 2000 when they won the Colby Invitational and the Lady Aztec Invitational in back-to-back weekends in March.
UO won two titles over the course of the entire season (fall and spring) back in 2011-12 when they captured the Dick McGuire Invitational in the fall and then the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in the spring, but it has been 15 years since the Ducks have had a spring season like they are having right now.
Win Over Top-15 Team: The victory also means that UO successfully took down No. 12 Northwestern, giving the No. 32 Ducks their marquee head-to-head win of the season, while also avenging their loss to the Wildcats in the Windy City Collegiate Championships earlier in the fall.
Quotable: Head Coach Ria Scott
“It is easy to win when your game is on and the team is firing on all cylinders, but it takes heart to win when you're not at the top of your game. Every score, every shot mattered out there – and it is great to reinforce that headed into the postseason.”
“We want to thank the Silverado Resort and their members for another great week in Napa! We appreciate the relationship we have developed and look forward to hosting the event again in 2016 and 2017.”
Next Up: The Ducks will return to practice this week and prepare for the Pac-12 Championships in Boulder, Colo., at the Boulder Country Club from April 20-22.
