EUGENE, Ore. — The cavernous dimensions of PK Park couldn't contain Michigan State on Saturday, and the Spartans continued Oregon's recent struggles by beating the Ducks 9-4 in a nonconference game, the sixth UO loss in seven their last seven.
How It Happened: Oregon (18-14) got an RBI single from Phil Craig-St. Louis in the first and a run-scoring single by Matt Eureste in the second to take an early lead. But Ryan Krill clubbed a two-run shot to tie the score in the third, the first of three two-run home runs on the afternoon by Michigan State (14-14).
The Ducks struck again in the fifth when Mark Karaviotis scored on a sacrifice fly by Scott Heineman, and again in the seventh when Craig-St. Louis came home on a double by Heineman. But a four-run fifth inning by the Spartans put Oregon in too big a hole to dig out of in the late innings.
Harber Departs Early: Junior starting pitcher Conor Harber didn't allow a hit until Krill's home run in the third. But he threw eight straights balls to the next two hitters and left the game with a shoulder injury.
Harber dealt with similar shoulder tightness in junior college, UO coach George Horton said, which sidelined him for three weeks. "He's day-to-day," Horton said. "We'll have him examined next week, and hope it's nothing that's going to keep him out long-term."
Search For Answers Continues: Oregon's confidence remains tenuous as the Ducks struggle through a long-term slide that has now seen them go 5-12 in their last 17 games.
"We've got to get it turned around," Heineman said. "Our mindset is there. We've got to get tougher, mentally stronger. Be able to take blows and bounce back from them, not let it faze us at all. We haven't been able to piece together a good game all the way around, so we've got to start doing that."
Up Next: The Ducks close out the series with Michigan State on Sunday in PK Park at a new start time of noon, with first pitch moved up two hours due to expected rain later in the day.
