New to the Mat: Payton Coon
10/20/16 | Acrobatics & Tumbling
GoDucks.com caught up with Acrobatics & Tumbling freshman, Portland, Ore. native, Payton Coon, about what she's most looking forward to before taking the mat this season.
Favorite Quote: Stay humble, work hard and be kind.
How did you get into the sport of Acrobatics & Tumbling?
In middle school, I was lucky enough to attend a few of Oregon's summer camps to really get introduced to the sport. Many of my former teammates from Oregon Dream Teams have gone onto participate in Acrobatics and Tumbling after graduation too. I have never really liked cheering on the sideline of sports games, so when I heard about Acro, I knew it would be a good fit.
What is your position and what is your favorite part about your position?
I have been both a top and a base. I like to base more, because you have more control of a stunt and it is fun to work together with the other bases.
Why did you choose the University of Oregon?
Choosing the University of Oregon was a no-brainer to me, because it is only two hours from home and I have looked up to the Ducks' Acro team ever since I first heard of the sport.
Have you chosen a major or leaning towards a specific area of study?
I will be going into Pre-Business.
What do you like to do in your free time when you're not training in the gym?
When I'm not training, I enjoy hiking and exploring and spending time with my friends.
What are you most looking forward to as a UO student-athlete?
I'm looking forward to creating new friendships with other athletes!
Who was your athletic role model growing up?
My biggest role model is my sister. She plays soccer at Arizona State University. Although she doesn't compete in my sport, she is an amazing athlete and I have always looked up to her amazing work ethic and sportsmanship.
What is your favorite part about the sport of Acrobatics & Tumbling? Do you have a favorite event?
I have always favored tumbling over stunting. My goal is to compete in at least one compulsory tumbling event and hopefully more!
What type of music most pumps you up for competition?
I usually listen to Drake or Beyonce to get ready to compete.
