Thomas Laurent Wins Green Singles, Teams Up With Cormac Clissold to Win Doubles to Close Fall
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team finished the Duck Invitational and its fall season with a pair of wins, as Thomas Laurent won the Green Singles flight after teaming up with Cormac Clissold to win the doubles flight on Sunday at the Student Tennis Center.
How It Happened: Opening the final day of the three-day tournament in the finals of the doubles draw, Laurent and Clissold were pinned against Goutham Sundaram and Jamie Fisher (Portland). The pair led from the beginning of the match and went on to win, 8-6, to claim the doubles title.
In a unique situation, Laurent and Clissold then went from playing together in the doubles finals to facing each other in the finals of the Green Singles flight. After Clissold built an early lead in the first set, Laurent rallied back to win, 6-4, and then controlled the second set to win, 6-3, and emerge victorious in the draw.
The Ducks finished the tournament with an overall record of 4-1 in doubles and 11-3 in singles, though two of the three singles losses came in matches where two Ducks were matched up against each other.
Sundaram went on to win the Yellow Singles flight, defeating Sandro Lena (Nevada), 6-2, 7-5, in the final round.
Quotes:
Nils Schyllander, Head Coach
On the weekend…
"It was a really good weekend. We got to play a lot of tennis, and I felt the guys really took a step in the right direction and were able to play consistent tennis throughout the weekend."
On the performances by Thomas Laurent and Cormac Clissold…
"Cormac had one of the better weekends he's had since he's been here, and I think Thomas had to play his best tennis to get out ahead. They both played at a really high level and it was a joy to watch them both compete."
On the team's mindset going into the winter…
"I think we ended the fall on a high note, which is going to make it easier to work hard during the winter. They have been working hard, but to have some success especially late in the fall makes it much easier going into the spring."
Up Next: After wrapping up the Duck Invitational this weekend, the Ducks will now have roughly a month-and-a-half off before kicking off their spring schedule in January.
