DUCKS DOMINATE SECOND HALF, LEXI BANDO LEADS WITH 22 POINTS IN WIN AT RAINBOW WAHINE SHOWDOWN
HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Oregon women's basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the season to rout Hawai'I, 86-49, behind a dominant second half on Saturday night at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
How It Happened: Leading by 10 after the first half, the Ducks (5-1) outscored the Rainbow Wahine (2-4) 45-18 in the second half to run away with the game and continue an impressive start to their season. Oregon shot an impressive 58.2 percent (32-of-55) from the field and found success from three-point range, making 12-of-20 (60 percent) behind six threes and 22 points from junior Lexi Bando.
Shutdown defense in the third quarter extended the Oregon lead to 27 points going into the fourth, as the Ducks held the Rainbow Wahine without a field goal the last 9:46 seconds of the period to take a commanding 63-37 advantage. Hawai'I went just 1 of-13 from the floor, while the Ducks finished the quarter on a 15-0 run with Bando closing the frame with a three.
Oregon kept its foot on the gas in the fourth quarter, with freshman Ruthy Hebard kicking things off after Bando's sixth three with five quick points to finish with 19 and a team-best nine rebounds. Buckets by Lauren Yearwood and Megan Trinder gave the Ducks a 39-point lead with less than a minute left, their largest of the night before a Hawai'I lay-up in the closing seconds. Hawai'i finished the game shooting 32.7 percent after going 5-of-24 (20.8 percent) from the floor in the second half.
Three-point shooting fueled Hawai'I to a 21-18 lead through the first quarter. The Rainbow Wahine shot 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from deep, hitting four of their first six. The Ducks went 3-of-6 from three-point range, with Bando hitting a pair, while shooting 42.9 percent from the floor to stay within three.
Oregon took control in the second courter, outscoring Hawai'I 23-10 to take a 10-point lead at halftime, 41-31. UO shot an impressive 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the floor in the period to build some separation, finishing the half on an 11-2 run. Bando hit her third three-pointer of the game with 36 seconds left in the half to push the Ducks' lead to double digits, making them 6-of-11 from deep midway through the game.
Who Stood Out: Bando's 22 points led all scorers and were a season-high for the junior, who tied her career-high with six three-pointers made. Hebard continued to impress in her fifth straight start, finishing just two rebounds short of a double-double. Freshman Sierra Campisano added 10 points with a pair of threes of the bench, and fellow freshman Mallory McGwire finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Freshman starter Sabrina Ionescu led all players with seven assists while adding eight points and three rebounds.
Notable: For the sixth straight game, Head Coach got all 14 eligible players on his roster into the game … The Ducks' winning margin of 37 points is the largest this season, four more than when they beat No. 24 Michigan State, 88-55, on Tuesday … The Ducks beat the Rainbow Wahine for the second time in five meetings.
Up Next: The Ducks will close out the Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Sunday with their third game in three days, facing San Jose State at 4 p.m. PT.
