11/27/16 | Women's Basketball
Sabrina Ionescu Has 11 Points, 12 Rebounds and 10 Assists to Lead Ducks to 91-62 Win Over San Jose State
HONOLULU, Hawai'I – Freshman Sabrina Ionescu recorded a triple-double on Sunday, Oregon's first since 1988, to lead the Ducks to a commanding 91-62 win over San Jose State in their final game at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
How It Happened: Playing in only her seventh career game, Ionescu joined the likes of UO legends Stefanie Kasperski (1986-90) and Bev Smith (1978-82) in the Ducks' triple-double club with totals of 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. The Walnut Creek, Calif. native led the Ducks (6-1) to a dominant rebounding performance, as they doubled up the Spartans (2-4), 62-31, with 23 offensive boards.
It was all Oregon in the second half for the second night in a row after the Ducks carried an eight-point lead into halftime. Oregon won the final two quarters, 48-27, to run away for its sixth double-digit win in its first seven games. Junior Lexi Bando fueled the second-half surge with 12 points to finish with a game-high 19. The Ducks held the Spartans to just 25.7 percent from the floor in the second half while shooting 45.2 percent behind Ionescu, Bando and sophomore Oti Gildon, who came off the bench to have a career-night with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Ionescu opened the third quarter with a three-pointer to start runs of 8-0 and 15-2 to give the Ducks a commanding 58-37 lead early in the half. A three-point lead near the end of regulation by freshman Mallory McGwire gave Oregon its largest lead of the night at 31 points before a bucket by the Spartans with 13 seconds remaining.
A 9-0 run midway through the first quarter fueled a 19-15 Oregon lead going into the second. Hawaii led 8-5 when a jumper by Sierra Campisano and a three-pointer by Maite Cazorla started the run that put the Ducks up 17-8. San Jose State responded with a 7-2 stretch to stay within four, 19-15, at the end of the quarter.
Tied at 30-30, Lexi Bando took over with five quick points to put the Ducks back up four, 35-31. Holding a six-point lead with time winding down in the first half, a great hustle play by multiple Ducks on a loose ball led to a lay-in by McGwire at the buzzer to give Oregon a 43-35 lead at halftime.
Who Stood Out: Ionescu was the clear standout for the Ducks with her performance, while Bando continued a strong start to her season with 19 points to take over the team-lead from Ionescu with 13.7 points per game. Gildon continued to take advantage of her time on the court, setting career-highs in both points and rebounds in only 13 minutes. McGwire finished in double-digits with 11 points, and Campisano added eight points and four rebounds.
