EUGENE, Ore. – The 42nd-ranked Oregon men's tennis team didn't drop a set as they downed Northern Arizona, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center. The victory moved the Ducks to 7-1 on the year and 4-0 when competing at home.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks started off slow in doubles but quickly recovered to claim the first point of the day. Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent won their second straight match as they downed Eden Peleg and Thomas Fisher, 6-1, at No. 3.
Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens were in a 3-2 deficit at No. 2 when they knocked off four straight games to take the match, 6-4, over Lucas Taylor and Felix Schuman.
At No. 1, Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno were down 4-2 to Ruben Montano and Tim Handel early on, but had won three straight games to lead 5-4 when the match was suspended due to the point being clinched.
With a 1-0 lead in the match, Oregon's Bartosz Sawicki and Ethan Young-Smith quickly won their singles matches at No. 5 and 6 to put the Ducks up 3-0.
Sawicki was competing in just his second singles match of the spring season, but after being tied with NAU's Thomas Fisher 3-3 in the first set, he took the next three games, winning 6-3. Then in the second set, he was even more efficient, blanking the Lumberjack 6-0. At No. 6, Young-Smith won 6-2, 6-2 to pick up his fifth win of the dual-match season.
Jayson Amos then clinched the win for the Ducks as he competed at No. 2 for the first time this season. After being tied with Ruben Montano at 3-all in the first set, Amos won three straight games to take the set 6-3. He and Montano were tied again at 2-all in the second set when Amos claimed the next four games to win it 6-2.
While the match was already decided in the Ducks' favor, Thomas Laurent, Cormac Clissold and Simon Stevens all won their matches to complete the sweep. Laurent downed Tim Handel 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 while Clissold put away Felix Schumann 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. Stevens trailed Lucas Taylor for most of the first set before winning three straight games to take it 6-4. He then jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set before eventually winning 6-2.
It is the third 7-0 sweep this season for the Ducks as they blanked Seattle U on Jan. 16 and No. 54 UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 18.
UP NEXT: UO will face No. 46 Louisville on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Student Tennis Center. A year ago, the Ducks traveled to Kentucky to face the Cardinals where U of L narrowly won, 4-2.
