Ducks Top Huskies in Pac-12 Opener

SEATTLE, Wash. – Geri Ann Glasco hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning and No. 7 Oregon went on to defeat No. 8 Washington, 7-2, in its Pac-12 opener on Saturday afternoon.
Oregon improved to 21-4 (1-0 Pac-12) with the victory while the Huskies fell to 19-4 (0-1 Pac-12) with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Washington jumped on the board first with a two-out RBI single in the second inning. The lead, however, was short-lived.
Oregon answered with a three-run third inning, capped by a two-out, two-run double by Jenna Lilley.
The Ducks made a pitching change in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff double, bringing on Megan Kleist. The freshman responded, getting back-to-back strikeouts to end the fourth, stranding runners at second and third.
Oregon extended its lead in the fifth when Geri Ann Glasco crushed a three-run homer to left center, her fourth of the season. Gwen Svekis added another run on a solo shot in the sixth inning.
BOX SCORE BLAST: Kleist (9-2) picked up the win after tossing four scoreless innings of relief with two hits, one walk and six strikeouts. At the plate, Lilley and Nikki Udria each had two hits while Udria scored a team-high two runs.
QUOTEABLE: “I thought Megan (Kleist) was the difference in the game, stopping Washington's momentum,” head coach Mike White said. “She was doing a great job mixing speeds and keeping the ball in the infield.”
BIG BATS: Oregon entered the game leading the nation in batting average and slugging percentage and proved those numbers against the Huskies. The Ducks tallied six extra-base hits in the game, with four doubles and two home runs. Oregon has now hit a home run in 18 straight games and has hit a double in all but one of its 24 games this year.
UP NEXT: The Ducks and Huskies meet for the second game of the series at 7 PM on Sunday for a Pac-12 Networks televised game.
