EUGENE, ORE. - New head coach Katrina Dowd rounded out the Ducks' new lacrosse coaching staff on Thursday with yet another decorated resume, announcing Becca Block as an assistant coach.
Block spent the 2016 season as an assistant at Florida, where she helped guide the Gators to an 18-2 record while finishing sixth in the country. Under Block's guidance, the Florida defense finished 12th in the nation in scoring defense at 7.45 goals per game. She started her coaching career in 2014 at Vermont, and spent the 2015 season as an assistant at Michigan.
"We are thrilled to welcome Becca Block to the Oregon Lacrosse program," Dowd said. "Becca brings a wealth of experience and knowledge as a player and coach to Oregon. Her experience competing on the U.S. National Team and her most recent season with the Florida Gators exemplifies the commitment and passion of Oregon Lacrosse. She will be a tremendous asset in teaching and mentoring our current and future Ducks."
Currently in her fifth year as a defender for the U.S. National Team, Block was the IWLCA Defender of the Year and an All-American as a senior in 2013 at Syracuse. During her four-year playing career (2010-13), Block helped lead the Orange to a national championship appearance in 2012 and Final Four berths in 2010 and 2013.
"I am so grateful and excited for the opportunity to join the women's lacrosse coaching staff at the University of Oregon," Block said of the appointment. "I recognize Coach Dowd's passion and commitment to the game of lacrosse and I pledge to work tirelessly to help elevate the program to a position of national prominence."
Block arrives in Eugene to familiar faces, having played with both Dowd and assistant coach Michelle Tumolo on the U.S. National Team. The three new Oregon coaches have tasted success together both with the national team and in 2012 at Syracuse when the Orange reached the title game with Dowd on staff as an assistant.
"We are so fortunate to be able to build a staff that compliments each other so well," said Dowd. "We all share the same lacrosse-specific philosophies and believe in the total student-athlete experience. With our previous shared lacrosse experience on the U.S. National Team and at Syracuse, we are excited to build on the success we've had together."
