Ducks Flush OSU By Record Margin
01/14/17 | Men's Basketball
Oregon won Saturday's Civil War 85-43, the Ducks' largest margin of victory in series history.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon men dominated the 347th edition of the Civil War on Saturday evening, winning 85-43 to win their 14th straight game, one shy of the school record. The margin was the largest ever by the Ducks in a Civil War victory, surpassing a 29-point win in 2002.
How It Happened: The No. 13 Ducks (16-2, 5-0 Pac-12) were in command from the opening tip. They led 21-0 before the Beavers (4-14, 0-5) finally scored, with 10:44 left in the first half. Dylan Ennis opened the game with a three-pointer, his first of three in the half on the way to 11 points at halftime.
There was no letup in the second half, as the Ducks continued to extend their lead while spreading around the minutes. Ten players played at least 11 minutes, and seven played at least 20 for the Ducks, who ended the game on an 11-1 run as OSU missed its last seven field-goal attempts.
Oregon finished the night shooting 27-of-52 (.519) and holding OSU to 16-of-51 (.314). The Ducks had 23 assists on their 27 field goals, and committed just 11 turnovers while forcing 21.
Who Stood Out: Freshman Payton Pritchard made 4-of-4 three-point attempts, the West Linn native leading the Ducks with 17 points in his first career Civil War. Ennis added 16 points and was one of three Ducks with five assists, joining Dillon Brooks and Tyler Dorsey. Jordan Bell grabbed nine rebounds and had four of Oregon's 12 blocked shots, plus a couple of potential highlight-reel dunks negated by turnovers, one on an offensive foul and one for traveling.
What It Means: In a game the Ducks might have been in danger of overlooking their opponent, they demonstrated their level of focus by dominating at both ends right from the opening tip. Oregon has now won at least 14 straight games for the seventh time in school history and the first time since 1947; the Ducks are one game shy of the school-record streak set in 1912-13.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman
On his thoughts overall
"I liked our activity the whole first half. I don't remember too many easy baskets. Guys flew around pretty good. The second half we got sloppy offensively; we missed a lot of free throws. And our defense wasn't really active. But the first half our defensive activity was very good."
On where the Ducks are at this point in the season
"We don't score as well as UCLA, we don't guard as well as Arizona. We don't rebound as well as a lot of teams. We've got a lot of areas to improve, and a lot work to be done. I like the direction we're going. We are getting better. But we've got to keep improving."
Freshman guard Payton Pritchard
On how Oregon set the tone
"When we start off going hard on defense, locking up, that's when it happens for us."
Junior guard Casey Benson
On why the game was one-sided
"We just got into a rhythm offensively, defensively, and that made it tough on them. We were letting that fuel us, get us going."
Notable: Oregon's 10 steals were a season high, and the 12 blocks were one shy of the school record. ... The Civil War rematch will be held March 4 in Corvallis, the Ducks' regular-season finale. … Halftime Saturday featured a pick-up game between Oregon football coaches and players. Highlights included a shot by head coach Willie Taggart that was blocked by quarterback Justin Herbert, who dribbled down and laid in two points at the other end.
