Ducks Battle, Stumble Late at No. 17 UCLA
01/15/17 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – Despite a big day for freshman Ruthy Hebard, the Ducks fell, 79-63, at No. 17 ranked UCLA on Sunday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion.
Hebard scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds but the Ducks (12-6, 2-4 Pac-12) turned the ball over 20 times in the loss. Both teams shot 44 percent from the field but UO's turnovers led to 18 more field goal attempts for the Bruins.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After going down 6-0 early after a pair of UCLA steals and transition layups, the Ducks settled in. UO took its first lead of the game, 11-10, on a Ruthy Hebard jumper with 3:46 left in the first quarter. Hebard finished with 14 points in the first as the Ducks owned a 19-14 lead.
UCLA again opened the quarter on a run, outscoring the Ducks 7-0 to take a 21-19 lead with 7:33 left in the second quarter. Another 7-0 run for the Bruins later in the quarter opened up a 40-29 lead for UCLA at halftime. Hebard had four more points in the second and took a game-high 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting into halftime.
After halftime, UCLA's aggressive defense continued to lead to points on the offensive end. Both teams scored 20 points in the third and UCLA led, 60-49, going to the fourth.
Oregon cut the UCLA to nine on two occasions early in the fourth quarter, but UCLA pulled away before winning, 79-63. The Bruins have won 22 straight games at Pauley Pavilion.
STAT SHEET: Hebard led Oregon with her career-high 29 points while also pacing the team with nine rebounds. Fellow freshman, Sabrina Ionescu, filled the stat sheet as usual with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists. No other player tallied more than six points for the Ducks.
TOP-25 TESTED: Oregon is now 2-4 against top-25 teams this season.
UP NEXT: The Ducks return home to host Colorado and Utah next weekend at Matthew Knight Arena.
