Brooks’ Return Sparks Win at Utah
01/26/17 | Men's Basketball
SALT LAKE CITY — Oregon used a 15-4 run midway through the second half to open up a tight game, then held off a late charge by Utah as the 10th-ranked Ducks (19-2, 8-0) won their 17th straight game, 73-67 Thursday night at the Huntsman Center.
The Ducks are now 8-0 in conference play for the first time since 1926.
How It Happened: Trailing 41-39 with 15:49 left in the game, Oregon went on a 15-4 run to take the lead for good at 54-45 with 11:10 remaining. All five Ducks on the floor scored during that stretch.
The Utes (14-6, 5-3) would not go away and closed to within four points, 70-66, with 1:43 to play. But the Ducks held the Utes to a single free throw the rest of the game.
Utah led for most of the first half. Down 29-25, the Ducks closed out the opening frame on an 8-2 run, including five points from Dillon Brooks, to take a 33-31 halftime lead. Oregon held Utah without a field goal over the last 4:13.
Brooks, who started Thursday after missing one game with a foot sprain, scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first half.
Who Stood Out: In addition to Brooks, the Ducks got 15 points from Jordan Bell, 13 from Dylan Ennis and 10 out of Chris Boucher. Boucher, who was battling the flu, also led the Ducks with seven rebounds and three blocks.
What It Means: Oregon is 19-2 for just the third time in school history. The other two seasons that the program posted 19-2 records were 2006-07 and 1926-27.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman
"Our guys found a way. We stayed with the defense and stayed on it."
"We got contributions from a lot of guys. That's what you've got to have on the road."
Notable: Brooks passed NBA all-star Terrell Brandon (1,263/1989-91) for 19th in UO career scoring with 1,283 points. … Freshman forward Keith Smith returned to the lineup after missing the last two games due to injury. … Boucher's three blocks give him 56 on the season, which is third on the UO single-season list.
Up Next: The Ducks seek the program's first victory in Boulder when Oregon plays at Colorado on Saturday (6:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
