Three Ducks Advance On Opening Day Of Regional Championships

Seniors Akihiro Tanaka and Simon Stevens along with sophomore Ty Gentry all earned berths in the round of 32 after the first day of play at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
STOCKTON, Calif. – Seniors Akihiro Tanaka and Simon Stevens along with sophomore Ty Gentry all earned berths in the main draw singles round of 32 after the first day of play at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships Thursday.

How it Happened: Gentry was the only Duck to log back-to-back wins downing Pac-12 foe Alexis Alvarez of Washington 6-3, 6-2 in his opening match going on to advance to the round of 32 following a 7-5, 6-3 win over San Francisco's Oliver Poysti.
Tanaka led the Ducks earning the No. 4 seed and a first round bye setting up a match against Fresno State's Cagatay Soke. The Japanese international fought back after dropping a close opening set to win the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
Stevens also had a first round bye thanks to his No. 7 seed. Stevens took on Portland's Tom Hahn in the second round rallying to record a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Senior Cormac Clissold fell to Santa Clara's Kamran Khan 7-5, 6-4 in his first match, he'll take on Gonzaga's Matthew Perkins in the consolation bracket.
Clissold will be joined by junior Armando Soemarno who dropped a hard fought three set match to Stanford's Sam Turchetta 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-5.
Junior Ethan Young-Smith dropped a nail-biter as well in his opening round match falling to California's Jackson Suh 6-2, 7-6(5).
