
Ducks Clipped in Day One of All-Americans

TULSA, Okla. – It came down to a deciding third set twice Monday for senior Akihiro Tanaka at the ITA All-American Championships, but the Japanese international could not cross the finish line falling in singles qualifying as well as doubles qualifying alongside partner Thomas Laurent.
How It Happened: Pairing for the first time ever, the senior duo opened the doubles tournament against Tulsa's Mitchell Pritchard and Boriss Kamdem. Laurent and Tanaka made quick work of the host school's pair winning the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to move on to the round of 32 later in the day.
After a brief respite the Duck duo faced off against Wake Forest's Alan Gadjiev and Julian Zlobinsky. The Demon Deacon pair ended Laurent and Tanaka's tournament run downing the Ducks in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.
In singles play, Tanaka opened the All-Americans early Monday morning taking on Bo Boyden of North Carolina. Tanaka won the opening set, but Boyden rallied to take the final two sets and the match by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Tanaka bounced back in the consolation bracket defeating Tulsa's Lucca Baptista 6-1, 6-3 to end the tournament on a high note.
Up Next: Laurent will have the next two days off before beginning singles tournament play in the main draw which begins Thursday.
