Doubles Shine In Day Two of USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals

ll three of the Oregon men’s tennis doubles pairs advanced to the round of 16 Friday at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
STOCKTON, Calif. – The Oregon men's tennis doubles teams took center stage Friday at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships as all three pairs advanced to the round of 16.
The Ducks earned five spots in the round of 16 as senior Simon Stevens and sophomore Ty Gentry followed up their stellar doubles play advancing to the singles main draw sweet 16.

How it Happened: Day two of the regional championships opened with the first two rounds of main draw doubles play.
The sophomore pair of Armando Soemarno and Gentry along with the senior duo of Akihiro Tanaka and Stevens entered the doubles bracket as two of the eight doubles teams to receive a No. 9 seed.
Tanaka and Stevens made quick work of their opponents on their way to the round of 16 opening the day with an 8-2 win over a duo from Eastern Washington. They went on to down Portland State's Otto Holtari and Gabe Souza 8-1.
Soemarno and Gentry recorded an 8-2 win in their opening match against Pacific's Chris Cajigan and Simon Solbas. In the following match, the duo came out victorious over Portland State's Nathan Boniel and Samuel Roberts 8-4.
After receiving a first round bye, the third-seeded pair of senior Cormac Clissold and junior Thomas Laurent survived a close 8-6 match over Santa Clara's Jesus Barajas and Vasileios Lliopoulos to make it a clean sweep for the Ducks.
In singles play, Stevens grinded out a three set win over Washington's Jack Davis 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to advance to the round of 16 Saturday.
Gentry continued his singles tournament run with a 6-3, 6-4 win over UC Davis' David Goulak.
Tanaka fought back to force a third set in his singles match against Santa Clara's Connor Garnett, but could not pull out the win falling 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.
Clissold closed out the day advancing in the consolation bracket with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win.

"Today was a good day winning nine out of 10 matches. Obviously we will be challenged even more tomorrow as we get deeper into the tournament. Hopefully the boys will keep on stepping up."
