STOCKTON, Calif. – Senior Cormac Clissold and junior Thomas Laurent secured a spot in the doubles main draw finals Sunday morning at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
Full results here.
How It Happened: With a spot in Monday's doubles championship on the line, the third-seeded duo of Clissold and Laurent squared off against Mikus Losbergs and Kasparas Zemaitelis of Sacremento State.
The Duck duo were able to secure the win over the fifth-seeded Hornet pair 6-4, 6-3 in their best of three-set semifinal match.
In the main draw singles bracket, senior Simon Stevens main draw run came to an end in the quarterfinals falling to Johan Jonhagen of San Francisco 6-2, 6-1.
Clissold finished the day picking up a win in the singles consolation bracket over UC Davis' Ivan Thamma 6-3, 0-6, 1-0(4) to move into the semifinals, but was forced to retire bringing his singles run to an end.
Junior Ethan Young-Smith also went to three sets in his consolation match, but was unable to pull off the win in a very tight match falling to Zdenek Derkas of Fresno State 6-4, 6-7(4), 1-0(6).
What It Means: Clissold and Laurent will face No. 1 seed Billy Griffith and JT Nishimura of California Monday for the doubles championship. The winner of tomorrow's final will earn automatic entry into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships which will be held November 1-5 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
Quotable: Nils Schyllander, Head Coach
On Clissold and Laurent's play...
"Tom and Cormac were in total control of their decisions and execution today. We look forward to seeing what they can do tomorrow, but we don't want to put anything past them right now. They are dialed in."
Notable: This is the second straight year the Ducks have had a doubles pair in the regional finals … A win tomorrow would mark the first regional doubles championship for the Ducks.
Up Next: Clissold and Laurent will attempt to take home the northwest regional doubles championships Monday morning at 10 a.m. PT.
