How It Happened: The doubles pairs of Tobita and sophomore Rifanty Kahfiani along with Sangwan and sophomore Julia Eshet opened qualifying play bright and early at 7 a.m. PT Tuesday morning.
Despite pairing for only the fifth time in their career Eshet and Sangwan came into tournament play as the No. 7 seed in the qualifying bracket. The duo were able to advance to the next round after downing Loyola Marymount's Eva Marie Vorecek and Veronica Miroshnichenko 8-3.
Tobita and Kahfiani will join their teammates in Wednesday's second round matches after earning an 8-6 decision over Elise Van Heuvelen and Zoe Douglas of Iowa.
In singles play, the Ducks were not as fortunate as Tobita and Sangwan dropped their opening matches in three sets.
Sangwan rallied to force a deciding third set against Duke's Samantha Harris, but could not complete the comeback falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Tobita opened strong against Jada Hart of UCLA in a tough fought opening set, but could not hang on for the win dropping the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.Â
Both Tobita and Sangwan would move on to the consolation bracket later in the day pushing their opponents to extra sets once again, but ultimately falling by scores of 6-4, 7-6(5) and 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 respectively.
Up Next: With their wins today, both doubles teams will continue tournament play in the qualifying bracket Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. PT. Tobita and Kahfiani will take on Nina Khmelnitchkaia and Anastasia Rychagova of Kansas while Sangwan and Eshet face off against Aliona Bolsova and Natalia Boltinskaya of Florida Atlantic.
