EUGENE, Ore. – Overcoming a sluggish start – thanks in part to the play of freshman Kenny Wooten - the Oregon men's basketball team pulled out a 74-68 victory over Texas Southern Monday in front of 6,249 at Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: Oregon (7-3) faced a couple scoring droughts throughout the night which allowed Texas Southern (0-9) to stick around. The Tigers took advantage of Oregon's slow start and scored the first five points of the night. The Ducks responded by going on an 11-0 run which began with Payton Pritchard knocking down back-to-back three pointers.
But that run was short-lived as Oregon struggled through a seven-minute scoring drought where Texas Southern went up by three. The Ducks began to show life at the end of the first half when Troy Brown Jr. got a steal and Wooten recorded a block on the defensive end. This allowed the Ducks to go into halftime holding onto a one point lead, 32-31.
In the second half, Oregon's defense prevented Texas Southern from scoring a field goal until the 15:18 mark which allowed Oregon to go on an early 14-2 run. Texas Southern continued to compete throughout the half and got within one point, 65-64, with 3:32 left to play. The Ducks responded with back-to-back drives by Pritchard and Paul White and a block by Wooten. With :45 left in the game, Brown hit a three to complete a double-double performance and secure the win for the Ducks.
Who Stood Out: Brown finished with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Wooten had 13 points and four rebounds. Pritchard led the Ducks with 16 points, while White and Victor Bailey Jr. had 11.
Graduate transfer MiKyle McIntosh reached 1,000 points in his collegiate career, most of which came at Illinois State, and had 10 points on the night. Pritchard also scored in double figures for the eighth straight game.
Quotable:
UO coach Dana Altman
"We finally got the ball inside. The first half we just took way too many threes, we took some bad shots tonight … I thought Kenny Wooten kind of saved us. He got some baskets inside and some key blocks and I thought he was the difference in the game."
Sophomore guard Payton Pritchard
"We fought it out. We just have to stay with it. We had a 15-point lead, so we have to be better than that, we can't give that up. We just have to move on to our next game now, it's a quick turnaround, we're not going to dwell on this game. We got the win so we have to focus on Portland State."
Notable: The Tigers have yet to play a home game this season … Brown recorded his second straight double-double and a career high 12 rebounds … Wooten has only had one game this season without a block … The Ducks recorded 15 assists on 25 buckets and shot 50 percent from three in the second half.
Up Next: The Ducks host Portland State in Matthew Knight Arena on Wednesday (7:00 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
