OREGON IMPROVES TO 4-1 WITH CLEAN SWEEP OF MUSTANGS AT STUDENT TENNIS CENTER
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team improved to 4-1 to start the spring on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 sweep of Cal Poly at the Student Tennis Center.
How it Happened: Coming off a strong showing at last week's ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Austin, Texas, the Ducks (4-1) returned home and jumped on Cal Poly (2-2) from the start of the match.
Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent continued their stellar doubles play together with a 6-3 win over the Mustangs' Garrett Auproux and Tim Tan. Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno secured the doubles point for the Ducks at the top court, defeating Ben Donovan and Corey Pang, 6-3.
Oregon carried its momentum into singles, winning on all six courts without allowing Cal Poly to win a set en route to the sweep. Ethan Young-Smith got the ball rolling for the Ducks at the No. 6 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Axel Damiens, and junior Akihiro Tanaka defeated Josh Ortlip, 6-4, 6-2, to give Oregon a commanding 3-0 lead.
Laurent, the 33rd-ranked singles player in the nation, clinched the match for the Ducks on the top court with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Pang. Clissold (6-3, 7-5), Amos (6-1, 7-6) and Simon Stevens (7-6, 6-3) all won on their courts to give the Ducks the clean sweep in the match.
Notable: Laurent improved to 8-0 in his career at No. 1 singles … Laurent and Clissold are now 24-3 (.889) all-time when playing together, and are now tied for 10th in UO history for career doubles wins … Amos recorded his 82nd career singles win, putting him only two wins shy of second place and only eight shy of Robin Cambier's (2010-14) program record.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
"It was all around a solid day. In a dual match, if you can play against a good solid team without dropping a set, that's a good day. Today we definitely did the little things right, didn't make too many mistakes, and did what we needed to do. We will have a nice day off and see the trainers, then hopefully get a good week of practice to be ready for Thursday. We have to be ready because it won't be easy playing three days in a row."
Up Next: The Ducks will stay home next week for three straight matches at the Student Tennis Center. Oregon will welcome Fresno State on Thursday at 5 p.m. to start the week.
