NO. 25 OREGON COMPLETED A THREE-DAY SWEEP TO WIN THE SD INVITE ON SATURDAY WITH A 4-2 WIN OVER NO. 30 TULANE
SAN DIEGO - The No. 25 ranked Oregon men's tennis team defeated No. 30 Tulane, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon to complete a three-day sweep and win the SD Invite at the University of San Diego.
The Ducks (14-2) claimed the tournament title with their sixth consecutive win and third in as many days. Senior Jayson Amos won in singles to claim the 90th victory of his career and tie Robin Cambier (2009-12) for the most singles wins in UO history.
How it Happened: Oregon won the doubles point for the third straight match to take a 1-0 lead. Amos and freshman Ty Gentry teamed up for a 6-4 win on No. 2, and Simon Stevens and Akihiro Tanaka clinched the point with a 7-6 win on No. 3.
In singles, Amos gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead and tied the program record for career singles wins with a dominating showing on No. 4. The senior from Mission Viejo, Calif., dismissed Tulane's Tyler Schick in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, without dropping a set. Clissold earned Oregon's third point with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Luis Erlenbusch at the No. 5 spot.
Tulane pulled within a point with a pair of singles wins. In a top-40 match-up on No. 1, Tulane's Constantin Schmitz gave the Ducks' Thomas Laurent, ranked 40th, his first singles loss of the spring with a 6-4, 6-2 win. The loss ended Laurent's school-record winning streak in singles at 18 matches. Chin-Shan Jao (Tulane) defeated Gentry on No. 6, 6-1, 6-1, to earn the second point for the Green Wave.
Junior Akihiro Tanaka clinched the match for the Ducks at the No. 3 spot with a 7-6, 6-3 win to secure the tournament title for Oregon.
What it Means: The Ducks now have their longest winning streak of the season at six matches, and they finish non-conference play with a terrific 14-2 overall record. The Ducks earned their highest-ranked win of the season over the 30th-ranked Green Wave, and improved to 2-1 against ranked teams this season. Amos tied Cambier's all-time singles win record at 90, and will look to become the winningest singles player in program history when Oregon opens Pac-12 play.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
"Great effort by the guys all week long. Very fitting for Jayson to tie the all-time wins record against a very strong Tulane team. I am very impressed with how he went about his business today."
"So many solid performances this week from the entire team. They deserved to win this tournament; everybody had a great week, on and off the court."
Notable: Laurent's singles loss was the first of the spring for him, and his first since October 15, and was his first-career loss at No. 1 singles (18-1) … Amos moved into a tie for fifth all-time with his 64th-career doubles win … Tanaka improved to 11-2 in dual-match singles this spring … Laurent and Clissold suffered a rare loss in doubles (No. 1), 6-4, 6-2, only their fourth doubles loss all-time together (31-4).
Up Next: The Ducks will have next week off from competition before they open Pac-12 play on March 31 at USC and April 1 at UCLA.
