SENIOR JAYSON AMOS NEEDS JUST ONE SINGLES WIN TO BECOME THE ALL-TIME LEADER AT OREGON AS THE NO. 23 DUCKS OPEN PAC-12 PLAY THIS WEEKEND AT NO. 5 USC AND NO. 10 UCLA
EUGENE, Ore. - Entering the start of Pac-12 play this weekend, Oregon men's tennis senior Jayson Amos is just one win away from becoming the all-time singles wins leader in UO history.
The 23rd-ranked Ducks (14-2) will open conference action on Friday at No. 5 USC at 1:30 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks in Los Angeles before facing No. 10 UCLA on Saturday at 3 p.m. Amos is currently tied with Robin Cambier (2009-12) for the most singles wins in program history with 90, and will get two chances in two days to put his name alone at the top of the record books.
HOW TO FOLLOW
The Ducks' opening match of conference play against USC on Friday will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks, with Brian Webber (pxp) and Justin Gemelstob (analyst) on the call. AMOS ONE AWAY FROM UO WINS RECORD
In his final season with the Ducks, senior Jayson Amos is one win away from becoming the all-time singles wins leader in Oregon men's tennis history. With three wins at the SD Invite, Amos ran his career win total to 90 to pull into a tie with Robin Cambier (2009-12) for the most in program history. At 90-29, Amos' career winning percentage of .756 is currently the best of any player in the top 15 in career wins. The native of Mission Viejo, Calif., is also one of only two players in UO history to have three straight seasons of at least 22 singles wins, joining Cambier, and fell just one singles win short of the all-time single-season record with a 28-6 mark last year. In doubles, Amos is tied for fifth in UO history with 64 career wins.
DUCKS WIN SD INVITE
The Ducks won three matches in three days two weeks ago to win the SD Invite, beating then-No. 30 Tulane in the championship match to close out non-conference play at 14-2 and on a six-match winning streak.
March 16 - Oregon 4, San Diego State 0 (Quarterfinals)
The Ducks jumped out in front early with the doubles point, and No. 40 Thomas Laurent (No. 1, 6-2, 6-0), Jayson Amos (No. 4, 6-4, 6-0) and Cormac Clissold (No. 5, 6-4, 6-0) earned singles wins to clinch the match. Laurent won his 17th singles match in a row, and improved to 31-3 all-time in doubles with Clissold.
March 17 - Oregon 4, Iowa 0 (Semifinals)
Oregon once again claimed the doubles point, and Amos got things going in singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4. Clissold scored the third point (No. 5, 6-1, 6-3), and Laurent clinched the match at No. 1, 6-3, 6-3, to extend his program-record winning streak to 18 matches and remain undefeated in the spring.
March 18 - Oregon 4, Tulane 2 (Finals)
After the Ducks won the doubles point for the third time in three days, Amos tied Cambier's program record with his 90th career singles win in dominant fashion, sweeping at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0. Clissold won again at No. 5, 6-4, 6-3, and Akihiro Tanaka clinched the match and the tournament title at No. 3, 7-6, 6-3.
DUCKS STREAKING AGAIN
For the third time this dual-match season, the Ducks have put together a winning streak of three matches or more and have yet to lose back-to-back matches. Oregon's current winning streak of six matches is the longest of the season and second of the year of five matches or more (5, Feb. 4-18).
UO LOOKS TO BREAK THROUGH VS. LA SCHOOLS
Entering this weekend's matches at No. 5 USC and No. 10 UCLA, the Ducks will look to do what no Oregon men's tennis team has been able to do - beat the Trojans and the Bruins. USC holds a 22-0 all-time record against the Ducks, while UCLA has a 24-0 all-time advantage over UO. The matches will mark the fourth and fifth for the Ducks against ranked opponents this year (2-1) and the second and third against top-10 teams (0-1).
LAURENT SHATTERS UO CONSECUTIVE WINS RECORD
Sophomore Thomas Laurent has enjoyed a stellar start to the dual-match season, winning his first 18 singles matches to destory the previous UO record for consecutive singles matches won of 15. Laurent broke the mark previously set by Simon Stevens (2015) and Robin Cambier (2012) with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Nicolas Moreno de Alboran of UC Santa Barbara on March 5, earning Pac-12 Player of the Week honors in the process, and added two more in UO wins over SDSU and Iowa in the SD Invite to extend his record. His incredible run came to an end with a loss to 38th-ranked Constantin Schmitz of then-No. 30 Tulane in the finals of the SD Invite. Laurent is now 14-1 in dual matches this spring, all at the No. 1 spot, and 24-3 overall in 2016-17. For his career, Laurent is 43-9 (.827) overall, 33-7 (.825) in dual matches and an astounding 18-1 (.947) at the top singles spot.
CLISSOLD & LAURENT SHINING IN DOUBLES
The duo of Thomas Laurent and Cormac Clissold has been as steady as they come since the two teamed up for the first time in 2016. The pair is now 32-4 (.889) all-time together, putting them in sixth on the Oregon all-time doubles list. The duo is 17-3 together this season and 12-2 in dual matches, and they set the program single-season record last year with 15 consecutive wins. The duo of Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno is right behind with an all-time record of 25-5 (.833), good for 11th on the UO all-time list.
IN THE RANKINGS
After slotting in at No. 23 in the latest ITA team rankings, the Ducks have now appeared in the top 25 in six consecutive weeks and have reached as high as No. 21. Thomas Laurent currently sits at No. 40 in the singles rankings with his stellar play throughout the season.
SCHYLLANDER EARNS WIN NO. 200
Nils Schyllander reached a significant milestone with a 4-0 win over Fresno State on February 9. The win marked the 200th of Schyllander's career, with all 200 coming at the University of Oregon. Now in his 11th season at the helm of the Oregon men's tennis program, Schyllander has elevated the Ducks to a new level of success and now sits at 209 career wins. Since the Pac-10 became the Pac-12 in 2011, Schyllander's teams have gone 98-45 (.675), and have won at least 15 matches each season since 2012. The Ducks took fifth in the Pac-12 last year for the second straight year, and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Oregon now looks to build on last year's first-ever NCAA Tournament win as it returns six of its seven top contributors from last season's team.
