EUGENE, Ore. – Mississippi State plated a pair of runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 5-4 victory to even the series with Oregon Saturday afternoon at PK Park.
Â
How it Happened: The Bulldogs (7-4) scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Cole Gordon off Ducks' reliever Connor Zwetsch (0-1). Brac Warren then came in for Zwetsch and recorded a strikeout before surrendering a bases loaded walk to give Mississippi State a 5-3 lead.
Â
The Ducks (5-4) made things interesting in the ninth with a Jake Bennett RBI single to score Morgan McCullough cutting the lead to one. Braden Stutzman reached on a fielder's choice and A.J. Balta drew a walk to put the tying run at second base, but the Ducks couldn't cash in as Matthew Dyer struck out to end the game.
Â
The Ducks got on the board in the second inning after Dyer lined a one-out double to left field and Tim Susnara drove him home with a double down the right field line. Daniel Patzlaff then followed with an RBI single to score Susnara and make it 2-0.
Â
Mississippi State got one back in the top half of the third on an RBI double by Jason Alexander off Oregon starter Matt Mercer to cut the lead to 2-1.
Â
Oregon tacked on another run in the third with a Dyer RBI single that scored Balta from second.
Â
The Bulldogs came back in the sixth inning with two runs on a big two-out Josh Lovelady two-RBI single to tie the game at three.
Â
Who Stood Out: Dyer had another solid day offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored … Susnara finished the day 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored … Mercer gave the Ducks another quality start pitching six innings and striking out four while giving up two earned runs on six hits … After recording three hits and hitting the eventual game-winning home run last night, Kyle Kasser turned in another multi-hit performance going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Â
On Deck: The Ducks and Bulldogs will finish the series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m with Cole Stringer scheduled to pitch for Oregon.
