Ducks lose at Utah to drop series
04/02/17 | Baseball
SALT LAKE CITY – Utah scored five runs in the first two innings and Oregon could never recover in the Utes' 13-1 Pac-12 Conference win at Smith's Field on Sunday.
How it Happened: Utah didn't waste any time jumping on Oregon freshman starter Zack Noll, scoring three runs in just a third of an inning. Sophomore Cole Stringer relieved Noll and got out of the inning, enticing the first batter he faced to hit into a ground ball double play. It only momentarily stopped the Utes offense, as Stringer ran into trouble in the second when he gave up a two-run home run to DaShawn Keirsey. The Utes added a run in the fourth on a lead-off double, a passed ball and a strikeout to take a 6-0 lead.
Spencer Steer put Oregon on the board in the top of the seventh with his third hit of the day, an RBI triple scoring Jake Bennett. Utah batted around in its half of the seventh inning, scoring six runs to build a 12-1 lead before adding a final run in the eighth.
Inside the box score: Oregon lost its first series of the season after winning the last four … Steer went 3-for-3 with a RBI, raising his average to .295 … He batted .417 (5-for-12) in the series with a home run, triple and six RBI … Jake Bennett, who had a hit and a run scored on Sunday, went 4-for-12 in the series with five RBI … Utah starter Josh Lapiana allowed just one run on six hits in eight innings, while striking out nine and walking none.
Long rain delay: The game started at 4 p.m. (MT) after a three-hour rain delay. The game was originally supposed to be played on Thursday night but was postponed until Sunday because of rain.
On Deck: The Ducks wrap up their five-game road swing on Monday with a game at BYU. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be televised on BYUtv (DirecTV channel 374; Dish channel 9403).
