LOS ANGELES - For the first time this season, the No. 2 Oregon softball team came out on the losing end of the score, falling 2-0 at UCLA on Friday night in the first game of a three-game series.
The Ducks (35-1) were held scoreless on five hits with no errors and six runners left on base. The No. 9 Bruins (27-9) scored twice on five hits with no errors and two left on base.
RECORD WINNING STREAK: Oregon's 35 straight wins to open the season tied the NCAA record. UCLA also went 35-0 in 1999.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks stranded a pair of runners in the first inning, third inning and fourth inning.
Meanwhile, UCLA took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single in the second before a solo homer to start the fourth pushed the Bruins' lead to 2-0.
IN THE CIRCLE: Sophomore Megan Kleist took the loss despite a great night in the circle. The RHP gave up just two runs on five hits in six innings with nine strikeouts and no walks.
AT THE PLATE: Alexis Mack, Danica Mercado, Gwen Svekis, Jenna LIlley and Mia Camuso each had a hit for the Ducks but Oregon couldn't string much together against UCLA starter Rachel Garcia. Garcia allowed five hits in seven shutout innings with no walks and three strikeouts.
