LOS ANGELES – Freshman Maggie Balint pitched a gem but the Oregon offense went cold and the No. 2 Ducks lost, 1-0, in nine innings on Saturday night at No. 9 UCLA.
The Ducks (35-2, 8-2 Pac-12) were held scoreless for the second straight game.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Hits were hard to come by for both teams on Saturday.
Oregon's best scoring chance did not come until the seventh inning. Jenna Lilley led off with a single and the junior moved to second when Shannon Rhodes singled to left. After a sacrifice bunt, the Ducks had runners at second and third with one out. However, UO could not score, as a fielder's choice grounder led to an out at the plate and a grounder ended the threat.
Alexis Mack started the eighth with a leadoff single but Oregon's next three batters were retired in order. In the ninth, Rhodes went to second after a one-out UCLA error, but back-to-back strikeouts kept the Ducks from taking a lead.
UCLA did not get anything going until the eighth. The Bruins had runners at first and second with one out but Lilley turned an incredible double play to get out of the jam. UCLA walked off with the win in the ninth. A runner reached via error and took second on a wild pitch. After a sac bunt pushed the runner to third, a passed ball allowed for the game-winning run.
IN THE CIRCLE: Maggie Balint was simply stunning. The freshman allowed just one unearned run on two hits in 8.1 innings with two walks and four strikeouts. After a leadoff single to start the second inning, Balint retired 19 straight UCLA hitters until a one-out single in the eighth.
AT THE DISH: Oregon tallied five hits in the game and left eight runners on base.
