EUGENE, Ore. – Tim Susnara broke open a tight game with a two-run home run in the seventh inning to lead Oregon to a 6-3 series-clinching non-conference win over UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon at PK Park.
The win gave head coach George Horton his 800th career Division I victory, four weeks after he won his 300th game as Oregon's head coach.
How it Happened: UC Irvine (12-15) pulled within a run after Oregon led 4-0, but Susnara added some insurance for the Ducks with his two-run blast in the seventh inning, driving in Matthew Dyer and stretching the lead to 6-3.
Dyer, in his first game back from injury after missing the last nine, got the Ducks on the board in the first inning with an RBI single scoring Kyle Kasser.
Oregon (20-8) extended its lead in the second inning, scoring three runs on three hits to take a 4-0 lead. Kasser came through with a run-scoring double before Spencer Steer drove in two more with a two-out triple.
UC Irvine battled back, scoring three runs in the sixth inning, cutting the lead to 4-3. Keston Hiura delivered an RBI single before the Anteaters scored two more runs on a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.
Connor Zwetsch and Kenyon Yovan combined for four shutout innings of relief without allowing a hit. Zwetsch went 2.1 innings with one strikeout before Yovan picked up his conference-leading 11th save, throwing 1.2 innings with one strikeout.
Box Score Notes: Jake Bennett recorded his second-straight three-hit game and fourth of the season, going 3-for-5 with a run scored … Susnara finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored … Dyer turned in a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI and a run scored … Kasser went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI while drawing a walk and getting hit by a pitch … Matt Mercer pitched five innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks to earn the win and improve to 5-1 … Yovan's 11 saves moves him into a tie for fifth on Oregon's all-time saves list with Drew Gagnier (2009-10).
On Deck: The Ducks and Anteaters will wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. at PK Park. Oregon will send Isaiah Carranza (1-0) to the mound while UC Irvine counters with Chris Vargas (0-1).
