04/09/17 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon secured the series sweep scoring seven unanswered runs after falling behind early in a 7-2 non-conference win over UC Irvine on Sunday at PK Park.
Isaiah Carranza turned in a solid effort on the mound, overcoming two early runs to tie a career-high six innings pitched while striking out three and walking just one.
How it Happened: Tim Susnara hit his second home run in as many days with an inside-the-park solo home run off the left field wall in the second inning to open the scoring for the Ducks.
Oregon (21-8) scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead. Gabe Matthews tied the game with an RBI single to score Spencer Steer who led off the fourth inning with a double. Kyle Kasser drove in the go-ahead run on a single in the fifth inning before Taylor Travess extended the lead with an RBI fielder's choice in the sixth.
The Ducks added three more runs in the eighth inning to break the game open. A.J. Balta and Morgan McCullough each delivered run-scoring singles before Kasser drove in the third run of the inning with an RBI fielder's choice.
The Anteaters (12-16) took the lead in the first inning on an error that allowed two runs to score.
Carranza (2-0) bounced back nicely after giving up the two unearned runs in the first inning, shutting the Anteaters out over the next five innings to pick up the win. Three Oregon relievers combined to keep UC Irvine scoreless over the final three innings without allowing a hit.
Box Score Notes: Steer went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored … Susnara finished 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and two walks, wrapping up a 4-for-9 weekend with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored … Kasser turned in a 1-for-5 day and drove in two runs to finish the series with five RBI … Matthews went 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored and two walks … James Acuna pitched a scoreless inning of relief with one strikeout and one walk while Cooper Stiles and Brac Warren both threw one perfect inning of relief to secure the win … Carranza has an ERA of 1.13 over his last three starts.
On Deck: Oregon will host the Portland Pilots on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at PK Park with Cole Stringer scheduled to start for the Ducks. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Network.
