Oregon run-ruled Stanford, 9-0, on Saturday to sweep a three-game series in the Bay Area.
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 3 Oregon softball team closed out the regular season with its 10th straight win and a sweep of Stanford following a 9-0 run-rule win in five innings on Saturday.
The Ducks (47-6, 17-6 Pac-12) tallied eight runs on five hits with no errors. Oregon ends the regular season second in the Pac-12 standings, a half game back of Arizona.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oregon's bats broke out early against the Cardinal. With one out in the first inning, Gwen Svekis singled off the wall in center to drive in Alexis Mack for the first run of the game. A few at-bats later, freshman Shannon Rhodes crushed a three-run homer to left center to make it a 4-0 lead for the Ducks.
Stanford's best chance to score came in the third. The Cardinal loaded the bases with one out after two singles and a walk. Oregon starter Megan Kleist got out of the jam unscathed with a groundout and a flyout.
Oregon added three more runs in the fourth inning. Jenna Lilley ripped a RBI double to left to start the scoring in the fourth. She eventually scored on a fielder's choice and Gwen Svekis drove in the third run of the frame with a sacrifice fly.
The Ducks put themselves in position for the run-rule win with two more runs in the fifth. Lilley made it an 8-0 lead with a RBI single before Darya Kaboli-Nejad drove in a run on a pinch-hit single to left.
IN THE CIRCLE: Megan Kleist tossed the first four innings, allowing no runs on four hits and two walks. The sophomore struck out five batters. Miranda Elish threw a 1-2-3 fifth inning with a strikeout to end the game.
