Ducks lose lead late, drop series finale

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State walked off for the second straight game, coming back from a five-run deficit to hand Oregon a 6-5 conference loss on Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
How It Happened: Justin Harrer doubled down the left field line with two outs in the ninth inning to drive in two runs and win the game for the Cougars.
The Ducks (26-17, 9-12 Pac-12) struck first, scoring three runs in the third inning off Washington State starter Isaac Mullins. Jake Bennett drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI groundout, scoring Daniel Patzlaff who led off with an infield single. Spencer Steer followed one batter later with a two-out, two-run single to make it 3-0, Oregon.
Matthew Dyer led off the fourth inning with a double and came around to score on a strikeout, wild pitch, stretching the Ducks' lead to 4-0.
A.J. Balta added to the Oregon lead in the sixth with a two-out, pinch-hit RBI single to score Tim Susnara, making it a 5-0 lead.
Andres Alvarez got the Cougars (22-22, 8-13 Pac-12) on the board in the seventh inning with a run-scoring single, cutting the lead to 5-1.
Washington State rallied in the eighth inning, scoring three runs off Oregon closer Kenyon Yovan (1-1) to make it 5-4. Harrer delivered an RBI single before Blake Clanton drove in two more with a double. Yovan bounced back, getting two key strikeouts to strand two Cougar runners on base and maintain the one-run lead before WSU walked it off in the ninth.
Box Score Notes: Cole Stringer pitched well for the second consecutive week, working 5.1 shutout innings with four strikeouts and no walks while giving up five hits … Steer led the way offensively, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI … Patzlaff went 2-for-3 with a run scored … Kasser turned in a 2-for-4 day with a run scored … Dyer recorded his 10th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored … Stringer has a 2.20 ERA in his eight starts this season.
