MADISON, Wis. – The Oregon women's golf team took Ohio State to extra holes on Tuesday but ultimately fell, 3-2, to finish fourth at the East and West Match Play at University Ridge Golf Course.
How It Happened: With both teams tied with two points each, the match came down to Oregon senior Kelsey Ulep and Ohio State's Niki Schroeder. Trailing by two holes through No. 16, Ulep birdied each of the next two holes to pull all square and force extra holes. After halving the 19th, Ulep fell to Schroeder on the 20th hole and the Buckeyes clinched the match.
Sophomore Amy Matsuoka led Adeena Shears throughout the majority of their match, defeating the Buckeye, 6&4. Junior Kathleen Scavo, who finished tied for first in stroke play on Sunday, took down Rio Watanabe, 3&2, after being ahead for most of the match.
Freshman Alexis Phadungmartvorakul put up a good fight against Jaclyn Lee, and led by one hole through the first 11 holes, but Lee fought back to win the match, 1 up. Ohio State's Alex Wright took an early lead and beat junior Petra Salko, 2&1, after Salko stayed within a hole throughout most of the match.
What It Means: Oregon finishes their first tournament of the season in fourth place, with Scavo finishing as the co-champion in stroke play. Phadungmartvorakul had a very impressive colligate debut during the stroke play portion, carding an 8-under 64 in the first round for the second-lowest single-round score in program history, and also picked up a win yesterday against Wisconsin in her first taste of collegiate match play.
Quotable: Ria Scott, Head Coach
On the first tournament…
"Overall, it was a great week of golf for the Ducks. If we added up the stroke play scores from the four rounds, I think we'd have Kathleen at 13 under, and Alexis at 6 under. This really reinforces that it takes a great team effort to earn a match play win. Most importantly, we learned more about University Ridge Golf Course and ourselves as a team."
On the loss…
"Match play losses sting a little more because they are directly head to head; but there were lots of bright spots and some things we can definitely build on for our next event."
Kelsey Ulep, Senior
On the team so far...
"This tournament has been a great start to our year, playing well in stroke play shows how much talent and skill these girls have! I love the energy we all have together when we're out there and I'm excited to spend the rest of the year with this team!"
Up Next: The Ducks will return to Eugene and prepare for the start of the school year before heading to Chicago for the Windy City Collegiate (Oct. 2-3).
