Men's Tennis Drops ITA Kick Off Opener To No. 12 Stanford
01/28/18 | Men's Tennis
BERKELEY, Calif. – The clock ran out on the Oregon men's tennis team's chances of defeating No. 12 Stanford Sunday afternoon, in their ITA Kick-Off opening round match. With three singles matches heading into a tiebreaker third set, the Cardinal managed to clinch the win, 4-0, leaving all three matches unfinished.
How it Happened: The Ducks opened Sunday's match with a win at the No. 3 doubles position. The duo of Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry made quick work of Stanford's Eric Fomba and David Wilczynski, 6-1.
That would prove to be the only win for the Ducks, as Stanford recorded 6-3 and 6-2 wins from the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, to clinch the doubles point.
After picking up two singles wins, the Ducks fought hard with their backs against the wall, down 3-0 to the Stanford.
Oregon showed their resilience pushing three of the remaining four matches into third set tiebreakers, at the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
Thomas Laurent, Cormac Clissold and Ty Gentry all looked to put UO on the board, but the match would be decided before any of their three-set tiebreakers were completed.
At the No. 4 spot, freshman Riki Oshima nearly held off Wilczynski in the first set forcing a tiebreaker, but Oshima could not pull off the win falling 7-6(6) in the opening set. The Japanese international eventually fell, 7-6(6), 6-2, as Stanford clinched the match 4-0.
What it Means: Following their loss, the Ducks fail to earn an automatic entry into this year's ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Up Next: The Oregon men's tennis team will play in the consolation championships tomorrow morning against No. 19 California at 10 a.m. PT.
