Ducks Sweep ITA Northwest Regional Titles
10/15/18 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team is leaving the ITA Northwest Regional tournament as a double winner with Monday's sweep of the singles and doubles finals. Sophomore Emmanuel Coste won the singles title while the team of Joshua Charlton and Thomas Laurent took home the doubles crown.
"To win both the singles and doubles ITA Regional titles is a huge accomplishment," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "The whole team fought its guts out this entire week and really bonded off the court. We keep this up and it could be a very Ducky year. I'm so proud of our two newcomers for qualifying for the ITA fall nationals. I can confidently say that is a first for us."
Oregon is the first program to sweep the ITA Northwest Regional singles and doubles titles since Cal at the 2013 event. Coste is the program's first regional singles champion since 2004 (Sven Swinnen). The Ducks have also now won back-to-back doubles titles at the ITA regional tournament; Laurent won with Cormac Clissold (2014-17) last year.
With their win, Charlton and Laurent secured a spot in the doubles draw of the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships (Nov. 7-11) in Surprise, Ariz. The Ducks will have three entries at the national event with Coste and Laurent previously qualifying for the singles draw. Coste qualified as a regional finalist while Laurent clinched a spot with his quarterfinal run at the ITA All-American in early October.
Charlton and Laurent opened the day with a three-set victory over Jack Davis and Piers Foley of Washington. After splitting the first two sets, the teams played a match tiebreaker in the third with the Ducks prevailing 6-2, 6-7(6), 1-0(8). This year marked the third in a row for Oregon to play in the ITA regional doubles final.
Having played a three setter in four of five matches to reach the final, Coste posted a straight-set win over Stanford's William Genesen. He capped his championship run with the 6-3, 6-1 triumph. With the first set in hand, Coste broke Genesen's serve three times in the second including one last time up 5-1.
