LAS VEGAS – Jakob Goldfarb hit two solo home runs while Spencer Steer and Gabe Matthews each homered once to propel Oregon to an 8-5 win over Indiana State on Sunday in the Marucci Desert Classic.
How it Happened: Goldfarb smacked his first of two home runs and tied the game at five in the top of the sixth with a leadoff solo shot to right center. Matthews followed an inning later with a two-run bomb, scoring Steer who opened the inning with a single, putting Oregon ahead for good. Goldfarb added some insurance two batters later with his second bomb of the game, capping off an impressive display of power by the Ducks.
The Ducks (2-1) got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off Indiana State starter Geremy Guerrero. Steer ripped a two-run shot to left, scoring Kyle Kasser who walked to begin the game.
The Sycamores (1-2) answered with three runs in the bottom of the first off Oregon starter James Acuna. A wild pitch allowed the first run of the inning to score before a two-run triple put Indiana State in front.
Oregon knotted it up at three in the second when Kenyon Yovan came around to score on a balk after reaching with a one-out walk.
Indiana State went back in front in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly and added to the lead in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Roberto Enriquez to make it 5-3.
Matthews delivered an RBI single in the fifth inning to cut into the Indiana State lead, making it 5-4 and setting up the Ducks' rally in the sixth and seventh inning.
Goldfarb Impressive in Return to Lineup: Goldfarb had a huge weekend in his return after missing all of last season with an injury. He finished 6-for-11 with three home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored and also recorded a pair of outfield assists.
Bullpen Shuts the Door: A trio of Oregon relievers combined to shut out Indiana State over the final five innings while allowing just four hits and striking out five. Kolby Somers threw 1.2 innings in his first collegiate appearance and struck out two. Parker Kelly (1-0) pitched the next 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit while picking up two strikeouts and getting the win. Yovan earned his first save of the season, going the final two innings with a strikeout and a walk.
Notable: The Ducks homered four times in a game for the first time since April 13, 2013 against Cal … Goldfarb became the first Oregon player since Shaun Chase on May 20, 2014 to hit two home runs in a game … Yovan tied Stephen Nogosek (2014-16) for second all-time at Oregon with 16 career saves … He finished his 22nd career game which puts him in seventh place alone in program history … Matthews finished a perfect 4-for-4, recording his third career four-hit game.
On Deck: Oregon will play at Portland on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. before a weekend series at Loyola Marymount beginning Friday.
