Ducks Fall in Series-Opener to LMU

LOS ANGELES – Oregon took an early two-run lead in the first in but couldn't score after that in a 4-2 loss to Loyola Marymount Friday at Page Stadium.
How it Happened: The Ducks (2-2) opened the scoring, getting to Lions' starter Josh Agnew (1-1) for two runs in the top of the first. Kyle Kasser led off the game with a double down the left field line and came around to score one batter later on a Jonny DeLuca single. After DeLuca advanced to third on a stolen base and throwing error, Spencer Steer drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left.
Loyola Marymount (1-4) answered with two runs of its own off Oregon starter Matt Mercer to tie it in the third. Brandon Shearer drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly and Niko Decolati tied it on an RBI single.
Lions' nine-hole hitter Kenny Oyama led off the fifth inning with a single and came around to score with two outs on one of Oregon's five errors to put LMU in front. A sacrifice fly in the seventh inning added some late insurance and made it 4-2.
After allowing the two early runs, Agnew kept the Ducks' bats in check for the rest of the night, striking out seven over 6.2 innings without a walk. Sean Paquet held Oregon hitless over the final 2.1 while striking out four to earn the save.
Box Score Notes: DeLuca led the way offensively, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored … Kasser went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored … Mercer (1-1) went six innings and struck out four with one walk while allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits … Kolby Somers went the rest of the way and fanned three in two innings, giving up a run on two hits.
Notable: Mercer made his 22nd career start, moving him into a tie for ninth all-time at Oregon with Brando Tessar (2011-14) … Kasser reached base for the 19th consecutive game, a streak that dates back to last season.
On Deck: The Ducks and Lions will play the second game of the series Saturday at 6 p.m. Cole Stringer (0-1, 7.71) is scheduled to start for Oregon.
