Pair of Late Runs Propel Ducks to 2-1 Win
02/24/18 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Gabe Matthews delivered a tie-breaking RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to give Oregon the lead and the eventual 2-1 win over Loyola Marymount on Saturday.
How it Happened: Jonny DeLuca tied the game at one in the eighth with a clutch two-out run-scoring single, driving in Taylor Travess who led off with a pinch-hit single. Matthews drove in the winning run with a double down the right field line in the top of the ninth, scoring Spencer Steer from first after he led off the inning with a single.
Kenyon Yovan shut the Lions down in the bottom of the ninth, striking out one in a three up, three down inning, picking up his second save.
Loyola Marymount (1-5) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning after Oregon (3-2) starter Cole Stringer allowed just two hits through the first four. Billy Wilson delivered a two-out RBI single scoring Cooper Uhl who doubled with one out.
Relievers Nico Tellache and Parker Kelly kept the Ducks in the game and set up the late rally, holding the Lions hitless in three innings of work. Tellache struck out the side in the sixth while walking a batter and Kelly (2-0) retired all six batters he faced and earned the win.
Who Stood Out: Stringer turned in a solid start on the mound, allowing just one run on four hits over five innings of work. Matthews finished 2-for-4 with an RBI while doubling twice in a game for the second time in his career. DeLuca made a stellar diving catch in center field in addition to driving in the tying run. Tellache set a new career-high with his three strikeouts in the sixth inning.
Notable: Yovan recorded his 17th career save, passing Stephen Nogosek (2014-16) and putting him in second place alone in program history … Matthews has hit safely in all five games to start the season … In the three wins, the Oregon bullpen hasn't given up a run in 11.2 innings pitched with 16 strikeouts and just three walks.
On Deck: The two teams will play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. James Acuna (0-0) will get the start for the Ducks.
