Ducks Stumble vs. No. 6 Texas A&M
02/23/18 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The No. 5 ranked Oregon softball team dropped a pitchers' duel, 3-1, to No. 6 Texas A&M on Friday afternoon at the Mary Nutter Classic.
The Ducks (10-2) had five hits in the game while the Aggies managed only three but a pair of Oregon errors proved to be the difference.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After scoreless first and second innings, the Ducks picked up a run in the third. With Texas A&M pitcher Lexi Smith a big wild in the frame, Oregon loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk. Shannon Rhodes then drew a bases loaded walk to bring home run and the Ducks poised for a big inning. It didn't happen, however, as Smith regrouped and got a popout, strikeout and flyout to end the inning.
Pitcher Megan Kleist was dominating for the Ducks, with 1-2-3 innings in the first, second, fourth and fifth frames, until an error in the sixth helped the Aggies score three runs. After a walk and a sac bunt, Texas A&M had a runner at second with one out. The Ducks intentionally walked A&M slugger Tori Vidales to put runner at first and second. A single up the middle was misplayed in center, allowing the ball to roll all the way to the fence. Both baserunners and the batter came around to score on the three base error.
That Ducks had a little bit of life in the seventh, when Haley Cruse and Alexis Mack each smacked two-out singles. With the winning run at the plate, Jenna Lilley lined a ball into center where the Aggies made a diving grab to end the game.
IN THE CIRLCE: Megan Kleist started the game for the Ducks, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits, three walks and eight strikeouts...Kleist had walked just two batters in her four previous starts this year...Maggie Balint picked up the third out in the top of the seventh in a brief relief appearance.
AT THE PLATE: The Ducks managed five hits against the Aggies, with two coming in the bottom of the seventh...Jenna Lilley has a hit in all 12 games this season.
UP NEXT: Oregon meets No. 11 Tennessee and plays an exhibition game against the Japan national team tomorrow at the Mary Nutter Classic.
