CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The No. 5 ranked Oregon softball team used two homers and a great outing by pitcher Miranda Elish to defeat No. 18 Oklahoma State, 4-1, on Friday morning to open play at the Mary Nutter Classic.
The Ducks (10-1) improved to 2-1 against top-25 teams this season with three more games against ranked teams coming up this weekend in the desert.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Mia Camuso got things started for the Ducks with a two-out solo homer to right in the bottom of the second inning. Oregon had two more two-out hits in the second but didn't score again after the solo shot.
OSU tied it up, 1-1, with a run in the top of the fourth. A wild pitch moved an OSU baserunner to third and a throwing error allowed her to score. The Cowgirls followed with a double to make the run earned for Elish.
The Ducks took back the lead with a three-run fifth. Freshman outfielder Shaye Bowden capped a 10-pitch at-bat with her first collegiate homer, a solo blast to left center, to make it a 2-1 lead for the Ducks. Oregon scored again in the frame when Jenna Lilley doubled and scored on a single by Shannon Rhodes. Rhodes then scored on a single by Gwen Svekis to make it a 4-1 lead.
IN THE CIRLCE: Miranda Elish improved to 4-0 this season and 16-0 in her career with the win against OSU…Elish allowed just one run on four hits in a complete game…The sophomore struck out eight and walked one.
AT THE PLATE: Shannon Rhodes and Mia Camuso each went 2-for-3 to lead the Ducks at the plate…Camuso and Bowden each hit their first home runs of the season.
