Big Innings Give Ducks Series Win over LMU
02/25/18 | Baseball
A pair of four-run innings helped Oregon erase an early deficit in a 9-7 win over Loyola Marymount
How it Happened: The Ducks (4-2) sent 10 batters to the plate and tied the game with a four-run sixth inning. Ryne Nelson opened the inning with a single, followed by a Jakob Goldfarb walk and Kenyon Yovan base hit to load the bases with no outs. Taylor Travess drove in Nelson with a pinch-hit RBI infield single to push across the first run of the inning. Braden Stutzman and Kyle Kasser each drew bases loaded walks and Gabe Matthews was hit by a pitch with two outs to tie the game.
Oregon took the lead in the seventh with another big inning, scoring four runs on two hits. Kasser was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Ducks their first lead before Travess came home on a wild pitch with two outs. Spencer Steer delivered a two-run single, driving in Stutzman and Kasser and making it 8-4.
Nelson led off the top of the eighth inning with a single and later came around to score on a wild pitch, adding some insurance for Oregon.
Loyola Marymount (1-6) made things interesting in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs and getting the tying run to second base. Nelson relieved Yovan on the mound with one out and the bases loaded and walked one before fanning back-to-back hitters to end the game.
The Lions struck first, scoring three unearned runs with two outs in the third inning on just two hits, chasing Oregon starter James Acuna. An error by first baseman Gabe Matthews allowed the first run to score before back-to-back RBI singles made it 3-0.
Loyola Marymount added another unearned run an inning later on a two-out infield single and error, scoring a runner from second base and making it 4-0.
Who Stood Out: Nelson recorded his first career three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored while picking up his first career save. Yovan went 2-for-5 with two runs scored while also getting the Ducks out of a jam in the seventh inning. Kasser and Steer both finished with two RBIs while going 1-for-3. Hunter Breault pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout in his first collegiate appearance. Parker Kelly (3-0) threw a scoreless inning while striking out one to earn his third win of the season.
Notable: Goldfarb recorded his eighth career outfield assist tying him for second most all-time at Oregon with Aaron Jones (2011-12) … Kasser reached base for the 21st consecutive game, a streak that dates back to last season … Matthews has reached base safely in all six games this season.
On Deck: The Ducks will host Seattle in the home-opener Tuesday at 6 p.m.
