Ducks Remain Unbeaten At Home
02/24/18 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team kept their home undefeated streak alive downing Northern Arizona and Gonzaga by duplicate 4-0 scores Saturday at the Student Tennis Center.
With today's wins, the Ducks remain undefeated at home with a 7-0 record. Oregon has only dropped two points throughout their seven home matches, both to Wisconsin.
How it Happened: The Ducks (8-2) opened the day in a close fight for the doubles point against Northern Arizona. After the No. 16 duo of Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent won their match at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, the remaining two courts went back and forth with the point up for grabs.
In only their second pairing this season, Senior Akihiro Tanaka and freshman Riki Oshima earned the point for the Ducks winning in a tiebreaker set. Tanaka and Oshima were deadlocked with NAU's Thomas Fisher and Feliz Shumann 6-6, but the Duck duo ran away with it in the extra set to win, 7-6 (7-1).
From there, the Ducks cruised to the 4-0 win with Tanaka picking up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Fisher at the No. 3 position.
Clissold fought through a tough opening set to win his singles match, 7-5, 6-0, before Laurent secured the match victory at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-4.
In Oregon's second match of the day, the Ducks took it right to the undefeated Bulldogs in doubles play.
Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry picked up right where they left off after dropping their last match, securing a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot. Laurent and Clissold closed it out with their second doubles win of the day, downing GU's Simon Homedes Dualde and Hunter Egger 6-4.
In singles play, Clissold and Gentry cruised to wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, recording scores of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively, to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead.
With the Ducks leading on three of the four remaining courts, it became a race to see who could clinch the match victory. Oshima would be the first Duck to cross the finish line defeating Gonzaga's Homedes Dualde, 6-3, 6-3, to clinch the match.
Notable: With his two singles wins today, Clissold vaults his brother, Aaron Clissold, for 11th on the UO all-time wins list … Clissold was also the only Duck to record two singles wins and two doubles wins on the day.
Up Next: The Ducks added a midweek match against Utah State this Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 4:30 p.m. PT.
