Lilley, Rhodes Both Homer to Beat WSU
03/10/18 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. - Jenna Lilley and Shannon Rhodes both homered as part of a seven-run second inning and the No. 6 ranked Ducks run-ruled Weber State, 10-2, on Saturday night at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Ducks (20-4) tallied double digit hits for the 10th time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks started the scoring early, with Gwen Svekis driving in Lilley in the first inning with a single. Mary Iakopo followed with a two-run double to right center to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead.
After Lauren Lindvall singled and Haley Cruse doubled to start the second inning, Lilley homered to right center on the first pitch of her at-bat. Alexis Mack then walked to bring up Rhodes, who blasted a two-run homer down the left field line. Iakopo and DJ Sanders both scored on wild pitches later in the second inning to give the Ducks a 10-0 lead going to the third.
Weber State scored twice in the fourth on a RBI double and an Oregon fielding error but it wasn't enough to stop the Ducks' run-rule win.
IN THE CIRCLE: Sophomore Miranda Elish improved to a perfect 21-0 in her career and 9-0 this season after allowing just two runs - one earned - on two hits and two walks in five innings with a career-high 12 strikeouts. Elish has tallied double-digit strikeouts three times this season, including twice in five-inning run-rule wins. Weber State's earned run in the fourth inning snapped a 35-inning streak by Elish without being charged for a run.
AT THE PLATE: Lilley, Iakopo and both had two hits to lead the Ducks while eight total players had knocks against the Wildcats. Oregon struck out just once in the win.
