Ducks Halt Skid With 5-2 Win Over Santa Clara
03/15/18 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team bounced back in a big way Thursday evening, snapping their four-match losing skid with a 5-2 victory over Santa Clara.
How it Happened: Determined to break out of their slump, the Ducks (10-6, 0-2) came out firing in doubles play.
After going into tiebreaker sets their previous two matches, the pair of Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry raced out to a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot, breaking a three-match losing streak.
Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent were seconds behind, downing SCU's Vasileios Iliopoulos 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for Oregon.
Up 1-0, the Ducks took it took the Broncos with Gentry picking up his fourth win in the last five matches at the No. 5 spot, defeating Iliopoulos 6-2, 6-3.
Riki Oshima made it 3-0 Oregon following a 6-4, 6-4 win to bring him back above .500 on the year with a 6-5 record in singles play.
It was almost poetic that the match clinching victory came down to Stevens. On a four-match singles losing streak of his own, the Belgium international defeated Santa Clara's Robert Seby, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot to get himself and the Ducks back in the win column.
Oregon's only two losses on the evening came after the victory was secured as Clissold and Akihiro Tanaka battled their Bronco counterparts in a third set, but could not close it out.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
On snapping the team's four-match losing streak…
"I felt like we played so well over the past weekend against two of the best teams in the country, and when you get within match point, it was just nice to get back up on the horse so quick. I think we responded really well."
Senior Simon Stevens
On snapping his four-match losing streak…
"It felt good. I was happy to be able to finish today and win and give me some confidence."
On his takeaways from the recent stretch…
"I think we learned a lot about our team the last two, three weeks. Especially last weekend, with those two close matches… If we can use the knowledge we learned I'm sure we can do something great."
Up Next: The Ducks will take a break for finals week before hitting the court once again, hosting Drake Saturday, March 24, at 5 p.m.
